Introduction

Within the former State of Yugoslavia, a Roma woman named Zara emerged, wielding extraordinary psychic abilities that set her apart in her close-knit community near a remote Bosnian village. These paranormal talents acted as threads connecting her to unseen dimensions, allowing her to guide and foresee events, providing glimmers of hope in the midst of impending chaos. Zara soon became intertwined in Bosnian forces counterintelligence. Zara, the mysterious Gypsy woman with eyes that held both darkness and light, drew wisdom from a life filled with trials, embodying the ancient knowledge of her Romani lineage and the tenderness of a mother's heart. In the year 1983, three years following the passing of President Tito, the head of the former State of Yugoslavia, she sat before the radiant crystal ball. Illuminated by the soft flicker of candlelight, her gaze penetrated the depths of the orb.

Delicate patterns were traced on its surface by her fingers, her voice resonating with both maternal love and haunting foresight: "Ivana, my precious child I peer into the mystic depths, glimpsing the unfurling future veiled in danger and insanity. I see a tempest of conflict that threatens to disrupt the unity we currently hold dear", Zara's voice carried a whisper that blended sorrow and determination,‖ As her fingers continued to dance over the crystal's surface, it was as though she was unravelling a hidden story: "I see you, Ivana, and within your laughter, your innocence; and in your eyes, curiosity mingles with doubt. But heed this, my dear, winds of change will howl fiercely. A storm gathers on the horizon, poised to tear asunder the very fabric of what we now call home. Zara's words bore the weight of a mother's love, an unspoken vow embedded within her prophecy. At this time, Ivana, her daughter, stood at the threshold of adulthood, a mere fifteen years old and yet set to embrace maturity with astonishing swiftness.

"Amidst this tempest, you shall discover love, summon courage, and unearth a strength you never knew resided within. The path ahead is treacherous, veiled in uncertainty. But remember this, above all: you bear the legacy of resilience, a torch ignited by the spirits of those who have trodden this path before you."

"I see my reflection in your eyes. My hands, calloused by life's trials, will be your shield. My heart, fuelled by a mother's fierce love, will be your guide, I shall stand beside you" Zara's voice grew softer, a lullaby audible within her words, for she was well aware of the terrors to come: "See into the crystal my dear, for it calls us all to make brave choices my child; choices that will shape the final chapters of our lives. And though the path may be obscured, know that even in the deepest night, your mother's love is the light that guides you home"

Following the passing of President Tito in 1980, the firm grip he held over Yugoslavia gradually waned. In the absence of his authoritative leadership, distinct ethnic factions within Yugoslavia began to assert their connections to their respective backgrounds. The once-stable harmony that Tito had upheld among these groups began to erode. Throughout the 1980s, Yugoslavia encountered mounting economic challenges and increasing debt. The pronounced wealth disparity between more affluent regions and less developed ones, notably exemplified in places like Bosnia and Herzegovina, further exacerbated the prevailing tensions. In the absence of a strong central figure like Tito, various regions within Yugoslavia began asserting their own political influence.

This shift in power gave rise to new leaders who frequently employed divisive rhetoric, resulting in heightened conflicts. The initial significant problems emerged in 1991 in Slovenia, marked by a declaration of independence that triggered a brief war. Subsequently, Croatia followed suit, escalating the level of violence. In 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina also declared independence, yet the ethnic Serb population residing there strongly opposed this move, preferring to remain part of Yugoslavia. This discord evolved into a full-fledged war involving different factions, leading to extensive violence, ethnic cleansing, and a widespread displacement of people from their homes.

As if foreshadowed by Zara's prediction in the crystal ball, the attempts to preserve the unity of Yugoslavia proved futile, culminating in severe violence. During this tumultuous period, the family became active participants in the resistance movement. Ivana, in particular, exhibited exceptional skills as a sniper and could proficiently assemble a Kalashnikov even while blindfolded. Her skills excelled as a secret assassin, by blade. Guided by her father's skilled hands, she absorbed more than just the technique of carving meat within the ambient glow of their halal butcher shop. Amidst that world, her father spun tales of ancestral valour, narrating stories that showcased her people's unwavering determination during trials. With a patient and tender demeanour, he led her through the intricate interplay of precision and strength, teaching her the art of wielding blades on flesh. Yet, it wasn't only the art of slicing that he passed down to her.

During the quiet moments, after the last customer had left and the shop's sign had gently faded, her father shared a different kind of secret knowledge. He showed her the way to move like a ghost in the night, to approach without a rustle, and to become the very embodiment of silence. As their hands worked deftly, cleaving meat and separating bone, he wove his knowledge into her young mind. The knife, he told her, was not just a tool for the shop but a symbol of strength, a means of survival. He explained the delicate balance between respecting life and understanding the necessity of taking it when the time came. The butcher's daughter became a guardian, ready to slip through the darkness, and bring justice to those who threatened her people. And with every step, every calculated strike, she honored not only her father's legacy but the enduring spirit of warriors who had come before her.

Ivana eventually became a member of a militia named the 'Nights of Adonis.' This group came to represent resilience and solidarity among Bosniak women during challenging times. The Nights of Adonis donned distinct uniforms that drew inspiration from traditional Bosnian attire, blending historical significance with contemporary practicality. They carried an array of weapons, spanning from rifles to improvised explosive devices. Amidst the backdrop of ethnic strife and turmoil, these women united to establish a remarkable paramilitary faction, challenging conventional gender roles and societal norms. Leveraging their deep familiarity with the terrain, they executed unexpected assaults on opposing forces.

But it was not only their combat skills which defined the Nights of Adonis. They were also healers, tending to the wounded and providing some comfort to those affected by the conflict's brutality. When the war surged forth, Ivana had just welcomed her first child into the world – a daughter named Maya. Remarkably, even in her tender years, Maya exhibited the very same enchanting and supernatural gifts as her grandmother. As the conflict's tapestry unfurled, Ivana found herself side by side with Maya's father, a Chechen mujahedeen of great renown. His courage was as boundless as his wisdom, having previously clashed with Russians in his homeland before venturing to Bosnia, extending a helping hand to the Bosnians. A mercenary by trade, his valiant exploits were heroic. But there was something strange about him; he did not pray.

Also, he did not adhere to any of the traditional Islamic ways. Nevertheless he was a fierce some man and nobody dared to question his devotion to his faith. Most mujahedeen fighters had converged on Bosnia driven by the plight of fellow Muslims facing attacks and oppression from Serbian and Croatian forces. Their sense of duty impelled them to safeguard their Muslim brethren, joining what they perceived as a just fight for survival. As the conflict's curtain raised, the siege of Sarajevo, spanning from April 1992 to February 1996, took centre stage.

During this period, the Chechen warrior was captured by enemy combatants following an intense gunfight, disappearing without trace. Though presumed lost in the turmoil of that first year, his fate remained uncertain. There also rumours that he had been seen being airlifted out of the area by helicopter which may also have been possible. Both he and Ivana's father had imparted vital self-defence skills to her, even as her parents navigated the challenge of raising a child amidst the chaos of conflict. Zara's psychic reputation quickly spread, as she foresaw enemy activity before it happened. She was recruited by the militias and became a local hero.

This made Zara an obvious target for assassination; or worse, kidnapping; however she continued bravely always prepared to defend herself or her family. Across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, her predictions garnered significant attention. Like flies drawn to countless corpses, news reporters fixated on the morbid allure. Their coverage didn't escape the notice of the Central Intelligence Agency, casting a shadow over the captivating potential of her abilities.

Ivana was 22 when her world shifted irreversibly—on the day her mother ventured out to gather groceries and never returned. Suspicions pointed to an enemy sniper's deadly aim or the ominous spectre of a lurking landmine. Yet, what truly transpired remained a mystery, as if a monstrous, mystical illusion had silently unfolded. Zara's abduction was orchestrated by men in black uniforms, their eyes concealed behind dark sunglasses—though no witnesses surfaced, this fact stood resolute.

She was transported to an initial destination, a covert black-ops base concealed within the ancient, splendid town of Ohrid, nestled in Macedonia. A former police station reincarnated for a sinister purpose – the 'evaluation' of suspects before their eventual dispatch, often to Guantanamo Bay – Zara's fate was no exception. Enduring relentless interrogations, some involving the controversial technique of waterboarding (a method later prohibited by the Geneva Convention), she ultimately yielded, succumbing to collaborate with the security apparatus. Her choice stemmed from a glimmer of hope; the sacrifice she made held the promise of a future reunion with her cherished child. As for Ivana, Maya, and her father, they remained stranded in a landscape of heartbreak and confusion, their comprehension of Zara's destiny obscured by the shroud of these tragic events.

Meanwhile, amidst the turmoil of Bosnia, Ivana pressed on, standing firm and resolute. She cared for her daughter Maya in solitude, all the while preparing for the inevitable choices that lay ahead – either a harrowing demise or a desperate departure. There seemed to be no alternative. The enemy's encroachment was an ominous certainty. As the war's echoes reverberated, the first stirrings of refugees began to emerge. Yet Ivana remained steadfast in her resolve, opting to remain and champion her country's cause.

By the culmination of the conflict in 1995, United Nations peacekeeping forces intervened, providing a ray of hope. This opportune moment arrived for Ivana to secure a safer future for Maya by seeking refuge in Switzerland. The harrowing decision was made – Yugoslavia's landscape had forever altered, yet the absence of her mother would forever cast a shadow. For Ivana, the journey was a bittersweet pilgrimage to a foreign land, a place of refuge and the unknown. But a new chapter was beckoning. However, life's script had an unforeseen twist – her father, who had chosen not to accompany them, gently slipped away in his slumber, shortly after their departure.

The journey led them to Davos, in the heart of Switzerland; a town known for its allure to the wealthy and influential. Upon their arrival at the refugee centre, the staff extended compassionate care, offering Ivana and Maya respite from their journey's tribulations. It wasn't long before Ivana's path crossed with that of an English woman named Elaine, alongside her American companion, known solely as Mr Jeffery. Within the confines of the centre, this benevolent couple extended their hand in aid, proving to be a beacon of kindness for Ivana and her daughter. Their apparent altruism would leave a lasting impression.

Time went on, and the bond between Ivana and her newfound friends deepened. An unexpected twist of fate emerged when Mr. Jeffery, recognizing Ivana's potential, extended an offer of employment. Alongside Elaine, Ivana was invited to play a pivotal role in welcoming and supporting fellow female refugees. The generosity didn't stop there – a splendid residence was allocated to Ivana and Maya, a sanctuary amidst the chaos. It was almost too much to fathom, this stroke of good fortune that had graced her life. Ivana's role unfolded as the housekeeper and trusted aide to the proprietor of the residence, nestled within the heart of Davos, a bustling town. The proprietor, a man of substantial wealth, held intricate ties to the realm of banking. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and camaraderie.

Even more heartening was the reception Maya, now blossoming at the age of 13 received. The gestures of kindness extended toward her affirmed the sense that life had, long last, pivoted towards a better ending. As Ivana navigated her role as a housekeeper and personal assistant, she came to know Mr. Jeffery‘s intricate ties to the world of finance, an industry that often created webs of power and secrecy. Maya, now aged 13, was embraced by their hosts, who displayed an unusual fondness for her presence. Yet, as Ivana and Maya found themselves immersed in this newfound chapter, the path ahead held complexities and shadows not yet unveiled. It was quickly discovered that Maya possessed a remarkable talent for language acquisition. Supported by Ivana's newfound friends and her generous host, Maya was provided with the opportunity to receive private education. Her aptitude for learning languages became strikingly apparent as she rapidly mastered English. For five years, Maya attended the finest schools in the region, nurturing her education and expanding her horizons. As she turned 17, she embarked on a higher education journey. Her sights were set on a future as a pilot, a path she was resolute in pursuing. However, the first step was acquiring Swiss nationality, a prerequisite for her aspirations to take root.

Unbeknown to her family, Zara had been moved to the confines of Area 51, in the United States.  Here, her extraordinary abilities were subjected to secretive experimentation, exposing the precarious balance between humanity's thirst for power and the ethereal. Her psychic talents became subjects of clandestine experiments and communications with a world unreported in our daily newsfeed.
